Nayereh has been serving a 10-year prison sentence in Semnan Prison since two days before Christmas 2025.

She and her husband, Qasem, were among the Christians arrested in the days after the 12-day war with Israel, in connection with their attendance at a seminar in Turkey earlier in 2025.

Nayereh spent nearly 40 days in detention, during which she was subjected to psychological torture, including being threatened with execution.

She was then initially released on bail equivalent to around $4,000. However, two months later, she was summoned again for interrogation and detained for a further three days until her bail—raised to over $15,000—was secured.

Nayereh was sentenced to five years in prison for “promoting deviant propaganda and teachings contrary to Islamic law” and another five for “providing financial and material support to groups affiliated with Zionist Christianity”.

She was also fined a total of around £2,000, is banned from travelling abroad for two years after her release and must spend those two years in internal exile.

Nayereh was acquitted of a separate charge of “insulting religious sanctities”.

Her husband was given a sentence of three years and six months; however, his sentence has not yet been enforced due to his cancer diagnosis and ongoing chemotherapy treatment.
